Our Animals
Myotonic Goats (a.k.a., "Fainting" Goats)
When we purchased our first two myotonic, or "fainting," goats in the Spring of 2015, we never imagined how much we would come to love them, and we certainly never anticipated that by the end of 2020 our herd would have grown to more than twenty-five goats and that we would register our farm as a breeder with the Myotonic Goat Registry (MGR)! We are continuing to grow our breeding program slowly and carefully from reputable breeders and retaining some of our own kids as we determine they fit into our herd goals. Most of our goats are either polled (naturally hornless) or disbudded (horn buds removed when they are very young) in order to prevent horn-related accidents or injuries. And we pride ourselves on socializing all of our goats so they are people-friendly because, well, everyone can use a little "goat therapy!"
AKC-Registered Great Pyrenees
Over the past six years, we have carefully curated a beautiful group of six AKC-registered Great Pyrenees dogs that not only come from outstanding working lines as well as Championship bloodlines but also represent the best of the breed with their conformation, physical features, gentle disposition, and outstanding health histories. But these majestic animals aren't just pretty faces -- they are also responsible for looking after all of our livestock and keeping them safe from predators, like coyotes, foxes, raccoons (yes, even raccoons, like most of us, really love the taste of chicken), and even hawks, eagles, and other vertical predators.
Occasionally, we do breed our Pyrs in order to offer their offspring to other farms and families looking to add a Great Pyrenees puppy to their pastures or homes. We take immense pride in our puppies and, therefore, all of our pups that leave our farm have been dewormed four times, have received their first set of vaccinations, are microchipped, and have received a health check from our veterinarian just prior to turning eight weeks old. Additionally, we offer a one-year health guarantee against life-threatening genetic deformities.
The best way to stay informed about our upcoming litters is to follow our Facebook page @SpottyCreekFarm where we regularly post about all of the goings on at our farm, especially our available puppies!
Lionhead Bunnies
Here at Spotty Creek, we pride ourselves in raising friendly, well-socialized animals, and our adorable lionhead bunnies make that job so easy! Lionheads are a very small breed of bunnies (typically only 2-3 pounds), and they are known for their gentle demeanor and propensity not to nip like some other rabbit breeds tend to do. Named for their super long "mane" around their heads, these buns are show-stoppingly cute! ... and speaking of "show," we raise both show- and pet-quality lionheads in order to meet the needs of buyers seeking to add pedigreed rabbits to their show lines as well as families wanting to add a furry friend to their home.
Chickens, Chickens, Chickens!!!
We have multiple varieties of chickens here at Spotty Creek that fill our egg basket with extra-large and jumbo-sized brown eggs. During laying season, we offer our eggs for $4.50/dozen, available at our roadside produce stand or via weekly delivery to Graham, Greensboro, Mebane, and Chapel Hill. Contact us today to reserve your weekly delivery.
Horses
We are currently servants to two gelding horses, a Spotted Saddle Horse, Patch, and a registered Warmblood, Madden, and one adorable Palomino mare pony, Bella. Each has their own unique personality. Patch is Kathryn's horse, and like his mama, he can be very sweet but can also be a bit bossy! He is gaited (like a Tennessee Walking Horse), so he has a very smooth ride and looks super handsome when he throws his occasional fit and gathers himself up with his head pulled back and tail lifted. Madden is Michael's horse and is the most gentle, old soul of a horse. He is a previous eventing horse at the Junior riding level and has won countless ribbons and titles. He has also taught countless children and adults how to ride safely. Sweet Bella is our eight-year-old's pony. She is so trustworthy and calm. She has previously been used as a children's therapy horse and is currently on lease to a nearby lesson barn where she is teaching lots of new riders the joy of horse riding!
